Today, Bernhard Kempa lives in Bad Boll near Göppingen together with his wife. For Kempa, he makes available not just his name, but also the decades of experience as player and coach to this day.

1947, the three brothers Achim, Bernhard and Gerhard Kempa came to Göppingen from Upper Silesia to join Frisch Auf Göppingen. As early as 1948, yielded first success in the Championship of Baden-Württemberg. Over the next few years, Göppingen was to leave its mark on German Handball. With Bernhard Kempa, undoubtedly the most outstanding player of his time.

To the end of his career, the backcourt player was German Handball Champion with Frisch Auf Göppingen eleven times, and World Champion twice with the German outdoor handball team. Following his active career, Bernhard Kempa stayed true to his sport and to his club Frisch Auf in the position of coach. First until 1961, and again following a 5-year break from 1966 to 1971, he coached the team popularly known as "Kempa boys" with justifiable pride, whose camaraderie, hard work and skill resulted in further sporting successes for Göppingen.
